Týn nad Vltavou is one of the oldest settlements in the South Bohemia. Town is spread over both banks of the river Vltava, not far from the place where it is meeting the river Lužnice. The beginnings of Týn nad Vltavou dates back to the first half of the XI. century, when the territory was in the holding of Prague bishopric. Fortified mansion of the steward of the bishopric was build here and a small village has grown around it. On the place of the original fortified mansion a castle was build in the first half of the XVII. Century. The castle perished by the end of the XVII. century, but in its place we can see a renaissance stone bridge in its place along with castle moat and the remnants of bulwarks.

To the year 1229 a first written account is given about a town, which aside from other things mentions a wooden bridge, at that time it was the only wooden bridge on the section of Vltava between the towns Česke Budějovice and Prague. This town was also I the course of history important as a dock for salt from the area neat the town Gmund, two salt houses were constructed for the storage of the salt, but the salt was also sold here. For the transportation of the salt boats and rafts were used. The area around the town remained the center of the raft construction until the beginning of the XX. century.

Thanks to its position Týn nad Vltavou is one of the favorite touristic attractions. In a close proximity to the town you can find dam reservoirs Orlík a Hněvkovice - heaven for anglers and lovers of water sports. The town lies on the end of the heave of the Orlík dam, between the dam and the town functions boat ferry.
